12 Scriptural Reasons for Latter‐day Saints
to Support Our Gay & Lesbian Neighbors,
Their Marriages & Families

Preserve Moral Agency

At the core of the international debate regarding marriage and the rights of our Gay and Lesbian neighbors and their families lies the eternal principle of agency. Since the beginning, God’s will has been to protect the agency of all His children:

"I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses saying… because Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the agency of man, which I the Lord God, had given him… I caused that he should be cast down"

(Pearl of Great Price, Moses 4:3)

If we believe these words of God, we know seeking to destroy the agency of any of God’s children has always been Satan’s work, not God's. Most Latter-day Saints would agree that marriage - our choice of a marriage partner - is one of the most profound, personal, important and sacred uses of our agency. Millions of God's Gay and Lesbian children want to use their moral agency to marry a companion they truly love.

Do we believe God has suddenly changed and is now pleased when we seek to legislatively destroy the agency of millions of His Gay and Lesbian children to marry according to their beliefs? If we support legislation which destroys the agency of millions of God’s children to marry according to their beliefs and conscience, what will we say to God if in the final judgment He asks, “Did you seek to destroy the agency of any of my children”?

Some disregard and undermine God's gift of agency on the grounds that marriage is a “moral issue”. But the Lord made it clear that the agency He gave all God’s children includes “moral agency”:

Jesus Christ declared:

"…the laws and constitution of the people which I have suffered to be established, … should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles;

"That every man may act in doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity, according to the moral agency which I have given him, that every man may be accountable for his own sins in the day of judgment…. "

"And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood."

(Doctrine and Covenants 101:77-78, 80)

"Who decides what is right and wrong in given circumstances? Where does the responsibility for the making of moral judgments rest? With mature individuals, of course, it rests with each individual."

President James E. Faust, former Second Counselor in the First Presidency,"The Weightier Matters of the Law: Judgment, Mercy, and Faith," Ensign, Feb. 2007, 52; Nov. 1997, 53-54.

Do the Lord’s terms “every man” and “all flesh” include God’s Gay and Lesbian children? If so, doesn’t the Lord make it clear we should “maintain” the same “rights and protection” for them and their families that all other Americans enjoy, even if we may not understand or agree with the way they choose to exercise their moral agency? Can "just and holy principles" like love, freedom, equality and agency guide us in this issue? Since “moral agency” is a gift from God, is God pleased if we vote to take away His gift of moral agency from our Gay neighbors and family members? Since California’s Prop 8, the Federal Marriage Amendment and other similar laws and amendments seek to change “the laws and constitution” in a way that takes away from, instead of “maintains” the “rights and protection” of millions of our Gay and Lesbian neighbors, can we campaign and vote in opposition to these clear teachings of Jesus Christ and truthfully claim to be Christians?
