Gays and the Gospel

12 Scriptural Reasons for Latter‐day Saints
to Support Our Gay & Lesbian Neighbors,
Their Marriages & Families

Bless All the Families of the Earth

The Lord promised Abraham:

"... in thee... and in thy seed... shall all the families of the earth be blessed, even with the blessings of the Gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, even of life eternal."

(Pearl of Great Price, Abraham 2:11)

We Latter-day Saints are blessed with both the lineage and the priesthood given to Abraham. Our God given latter-day mission is to be instruments in His hands to bring about His promise. Are we Latter-day Saints willing to fulfill our Abrahamic covenant? Or will we allow tradition - traditional beliefs, practices and policies - to deter us? Will we only bless families who are just like ours? Do we believe when the Lord Jehovah laid out His plan and promise He knew that in the latter-days when this promise was to be fulfilled, God's Gay and Lesbian children would have families and thousands would be members of His Church and would seek the full blessings of His Gospel and Church - the blessing of baptism for themselves and their children, the blessings of marriage, the blessings of salvation, even of life eternal? Will we believe and trust the Lord enough that when He says with such unmistakenable clarity "all the families of the earth [shall] be blessed" that includes the families of our Gay and Lesbian neighbors as much as it includes our own family?

Nowhere in all of LDS scripture did the Lord say anything that excludes His Gay and Lesbian followers or their families. Nor is there any God given gospel requirement that Gay or Lesbian families cannot fulfill as well as Straight families (including having families through adoption, as in Abraham's family, or "the law of Sarah" (see D&C 132:65)). If we believe the Lord's words we know it is spiritually perilous to add to or take from the Lord's words. (see 3 Nephi 11:40; D&C:98:7; Deut. 4:2; 2 Nephi 9:28-29; Rev. 22:18-19). Adding exclusions like "only traditional families" or "only marriages between a man and a woman" or "except Gay or Lesbian families" adds words He never said and takes away from His consistently all-inclusive words.

The Lord has already decreed what will happen: Gay, Straight, Black, White, Jew or Gentile, "traditional" or non-traditional, through Abrahams's seed and His priesthood "shall all the families of the earth be blessed, even with the blessings of the gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, even of life eternal." The only uncertainty is whether His word will be fulfilled by His servants' voice faithfully carrying out His decree or if a lack of belief and faith in His words will require us to wait, (just as Black families had to wait for more believing and faithful servants to be raised up), for this to be fulfilled by His own voice - regardless, it is the same - ALL families of the earth will be blessed with Gospel blessings. Current policy is to not bless millions of families of the earth; to deny them the specific blessings the Lord laid out. Will we lay down the weapons of our tradition to fulfill our Abrahamic covenant of salvation? Or will the Lord say also to us, "Thus have ye made the commandments of God of none effect by your tradition" (Matt. 15:6)?

The Lord has given us His promise and mandate to bless ALL the families of the earth. He has given us His power and authority to fulfill His glorious promise. Do we have the belief, desire, faith and trust to fulfill His words?

Jesus asked:

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”

(Luke 6:46)
